Next Meeting: Monday 16th December 5.00 – 6.00 pm

The next Aboriginal Art Reading Group will be held next Monday the 16th of December from 5 – 6pm in room 307 of the John Medley Building.

We will be reading:

van Damme, Wilfried (2012). ‘Not What You Expect: The Nineteenth-Century European Reception of Australian Aboriginal Art’, Konsthistorisk tidskrift/Journal of Art History 81(3), 133-149.

and

a selection of reviews of the recent Royal Academy of Art exhibition ‘Australia‘ 

Januszczak, Waldemar (2013) ‘Australia (Review)’, The Sunday Times, 22 September, 14-15.

Campbell-Johnston, Rachel (2013) ‘From Bush to Beach: A Panoramic View of a Vast and Diverse Nation. Australia: Royal Academy’, The Times, 16 September, 7.

Nick Miller (2013) ‘“Cascade of diarrhoea”: UK critic savages Australian art exhibition’. Sydney Morning Herald OnlineMonday 23 September.

We will also be joined by a special guest, Rachael Murphy, PhD candidate, University of East Anglia.  Rachael is in Australia conducting fieldwork for her dissertation on the British reception of Indigenous Australian art 1960 to now and will be leading the discussion on this now infamous RA show. She is also assisting the British Museum with documentation for ‘the forthcoming linked exhibitions in London and Canberra based on key objects from the BM’s Australian indigenous collection. The Canberra exhibition will mark the first time these artefacts have been back in Australia’ – read more HERE.
