September Meeting: Margo Smith’s “Aesthete and Scholar: Two Complementary Influences in the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia” and “Pasifika Styles: Artists inside the museum” exhibition catalog

The next Aboriginal Art Reading Group meeting will be Tuesday, 21 September, 5:30PM, Room G38, Elisabeth Murdoch Building.

We will be reading selections from Pasifika Styles: Artists inside the museum edited by Rosanna Raymond and Amiria Salmond. This catalog was produced on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name from 5 May 2006 to 23 February 2008 at the University of Cambridge Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. In celebration of John W. Kluge, the founder of the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection at the University of Virginia who passed away earlier this month at age 95, we will also be reading Margo Smith’s “Aesthete and Scholar: Two Complementary Influences in the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia,” in Lindy Allen, Louise Hamby and Nicolas Peterson (Eds). The Makers and Making of Indigenous Australian Museum Collections, Carlton, VIC: Melbourne University Press, 2008, pp. 556-579.

A copy of the readings, available for photocopying, will be available in early September in an envelope on the notice board outside Dr Susan Lowish’s office, room G27, ground floor Elisabeth Murdoch Building.
